"One should fear silence"
There are some people who are afraid of silence. For them, silence, the absence of intentional sounds, can bring on panic attacks. There are some explanations why people do not feel comfortable with silence. People suffering from this phobia cannot withstand silence; they are always looking for noise and human interaction. The reasons why people fear silence differ from one person to another.
People who have had a traumatic or negative episode in their lives
related with silence are prone to have this phobia. For example, a child that has
been locked in basements or closets for punishments, where no sound reaches
them, is more likely to have this type of phobia. The feeling of loneliness
because of silence can get permanently printed on his or her mind.
Technology is another cause of this type of phobia. For many people,
technology has become a necessity and therefore they cannot live without the
noise of their cell phone, television, and other devices. For these people, it is
impossible to meditate or stay in a quiet room because they get desperate for
not having technology in hand.
Being afraid of the night is the most common cause of this phobia. Many
people fear that the night could bring on the appearing of ghosts or other
supernatural beings. For some, fear of darkeness and silence are phobias that are related. That is why in many cases, these people cannot sleep in
the dark, so they need to leave the light on and the radio on.
In summary, for some people silence can be downright scary, which means that
they are always looking for noise and human interaction. The reasons why people fear
silence vary from one person to another. Some people have experienced negative
situations related to silence, others have been affected by technology and for
others the night has provoked this type of phobia.
